James Sofronas’ career as a driver is coming full circle this weekend at Lime Rock Park. That’s where the GMG star driver/owner earned his first competition license more than 15 years ago. It’s also where he and the GMG crew will look for their first victory in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
Sofronas will drive GMG’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry with Bret Curtis, his teammate for the entirety of the 2010 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón, in the highly competitive GT Challenge class. The pairing is in can get back in the thick of the class championship hunt with a victory at Lime Rock; the GMG duo’s season-best to date is a runner-up finish at Long Beach.
As was the case there, track position will be at a premium at Lime Rock - a 1.5-mile, 10-turn layout that tests a driver’s patience and nerves as well as quickness.
“Going back to Lime Rock is going to be more exciting,” said Sofronas, who earned his SCCA license at the track in 1994. “All the GTC cars are capable of winning. That’s what you want – you want that competition. And it’s really going to show itself at Lime Rock because it is such a short lap. You’ve got to take advantage of every single opportunity and really be on your game there.”
Sofronas and the rest of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón will travel to Lime Rock Park for the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix. The fifth round of the 2010 season is a two-hour, 45-minute race set for 2:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 24 from Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. SPEED will air the race live at 2 p.m. ET. Live radio coverage will be available on American Le Mans Radio presented by Porsche – a production of Radio Show Limited – as well as Sirius Channel 127 and XM Channel 242.
